Heidelberg Materials granted 30-year quarry permit in Slite, Sweden

The Swedish Land and Environmental Court has granted Heidelberg Materials a 30-year permit to continue quarrying operations in Slite on the Swedish Island of Gotland. The permit is effective immediately. The 30-year permit provides a stable framework for continued operations in Slite and includes a comprehensive package of protection measures for water and the natural environment.

The cement plant in Slite is of major importance for the Swedish construction industry since up to three quarters of the cement used for concrete production in Sweden are currently produced at this plant. A long-term quarrying licence is also an important prerequisite for the planned carbon capture and storage facility in Slite. Development work is currently on hold whilst efforts to secure funding continue.
