evoBuild® – going beyond CO₂ reduction

Climate-friendly construction requires climate-friendly building materials. At Heidelberg Materials, we’re developing the sustainable materials and solutions of the future.

As one of the world‘s largest integrated manufacturers of building materials and solutions, environmental responsibility is at the heart of our business. The quality and performance of each of our products is documented in the specific safety data sheets we make available to customers.

With the launch of evoBuild, our new global brand for low-carbon and circular products, we’re setting new standards for sustainable building materials and pioneering our industry’s path towards net-zero and the circular economy.

Our evoBuild products provide our customers with the high quality and reliability they have come to expect from Heidelberg Materials, with a special focus on sustainability through significant CO₂ reduction and a valuable contribution to circularity.

One vision, one range: Setting new standards

One of our key targets is to generate 50% of our global revenue through sustainable products by 2030. We’re working intensively to develop innovative materials that meet the highest quality standards over their entire lifecycle and are produced using environmentally as well as socially responsible methods. Through resource efficiency, coprocessing of waste materials, and concrete recycling, we actively drive the circular economy within our industry.

Introducing our evoBuild® products

All evoBuild-branded products are characterised by their clear sustainability credentials. Each product must meet strict requirements to become part of the range.

These requirements are clearly defined within an internal ESG procedure and constitute the basis for the product qualification for evoBuild.

evoBuild products are either low-carbon (cement and concrete), circular or feature a combination of both attributes. Low-carbon products must provide a CO₂ reduction of at least 30% compared to the reference value. Circular products must either contain at least 30% recycled content or use at least 30% less material. The evoBuild standards apply to cement, ready-mixed concrete, aggregates, and asphalt.

These same criteria apply to all of Heidelberg Materials’ country and commercial organisations around the world to provide clear, consistent, and transparent tiering for all our sustainable products. From the beginning of 2024, all Group countries will gradually integrate their sustainable products into the evoBuild portfolio.

1 30% vs. GCCA CEM in 2020, translates to ≤ 552 kg CO₂/t cementitious and < 5.5 kg CO₂/m³/MPa

Product information

evoBuild products will be available in all business lines. The reference value of evoBuild for CO₂ reduction is 30% vs. the definition from the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) for CEM I from 2020, which translates to ≤552 kg CO₂/t cementitious material and ≤ 5.5 kg CO₂/m³/MPa for ready-mixed concrete.

When evoBuild is used as a recycling product, the recycled content for ready-mixed concrete and aggregate blends must meet 30% of the aggregate’s volume.

Circular products with reduced material use are not yet part of this procedure but will be included in the future.

Understanding the sustainability benefits

In the future, the following key product segments will be included in evoBuild:

Cement and concrete with reduced carbon footprints: By using substances such as blast furnace slag and fly ash as secondary cementitious materials (SCMs), we can substantially reduce the CO₂ intensity of cement. This also leads to a CO₂ reduction in concrete and in certain concrete products (concrete, precast elements, pavement stones, etc.).

Aggregate blends and concrete with recycled aggregates: We offer both aggregate blends and concrete solutions containing varying proportions of recycled aggregates across the world, reducing the demand for virgin raw materials.

Solutions with less material: Other innovative solutions reduce the amount of material required, such as through precision engineering and the targeted use of material, or through the safe and cost-efficient renovation of infrastructure that has reached the end of its service life. This category includes, for example, ultra high-performance concrete (UHPC) and products for 3D concrete printing.
