Engineers Without Borders: our new social sustainability partnership
HeidelbergCement’s companies in Sweden and Norway and the non-profit organisation Engineers Without Borders (EWB) have entered into a partnership that gives the employees of HeidelbergCement in Sweden and Norway the opportunity to participate in projects run by EWB during working hours.
Every year, Engineers Without Borders realise projects around the world that improve people’s everyday life. Their projects base on local needs and promote sustainable technologies. In order to carry out these projects, skills are needed in different areas and make cooperation with business partners an important contributor to their success: HeidelbergCement’s commitment to allow its Northern Europe employees to contribute during office hours gives EWB important resources to undertake international projects and to promote the profession of engineers.
General Manager of HeidelbergCement Northern Europe, Giv Brantenberg, prospects a fruitful cooperation between the partners from different fields: “We will help build robust societies in many parts of the world, where good resource use and sustainable solutions with little climate impact will be important factors. I am confident that the synergy between HeidelbergCement's wide-ranging competence within building materials and Engineers Without Borders' knowledge of disadvantaged areas will lead to good projects in countries that really need them.”
In detail, the partnership is aimed at developing a more sustainable infrastructure in disadvantaged areas with a focus on the efficient use of resources and an increased use of technology to create sustainable communities. Engineers Without Borders also works to encourage interest in building and engineering in Sweden and Norway through mentorship, themed evening events and other activities.
EWB’s work goes along with HeidelbergCement’s vision to build a sustainable society: One important part of the Group’s Sustainability Commitments 2030 is our relationship with the communities in which we operate. We aim at being “a good neighbour” and this partnership will supplement our current sustainability projects.
