HeidelbergCement teams up with industry and experts to create a certification system for responsibly sourced concrete
On 1st January, at the initiative of the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) launched a new certification system for sustainably sourced concrete.
HeidelbergCement is one of the founding members of the CSC, and played a leading role in the development of the certification system. The worldwide system is designed to help customers be sure that the products they buy are produced in an environmentally, socially and economically responsible way. The CSC certification covers the whole supply chain.
With the certification system for responsibly sourced concrete, the CSC aims to improve the transparency of the entire concrete sector. It also highlights the essential role of concrete in the creation of a sustainable construction industry, and HeidelbergCement expects that this will increasingly be reflected by 'green' procurement policies in the public sector and rating systems for sustainable buildings.
In the Netherlands, CSC certification is already affiliated with the “Beton Bewust” Quality Mark for sustainable concrete production. In April, Mebin, the Dutch subsidiary of HeidelbergCement, has become one of the first companies in the world to receive Beton Bewust/CSC certification for the responsible sourcing of the concrete produced at all of its plants.
The CSC certification system was started as a joint initiative between cement and concrete firms, industry associations and certification bodies. It was tested under practical conditions in an industrial piloting phase. At the same time, environmental experts and representatives of various civil society organizations contributed to the process as part of a stakeholder dialogue under the auspices of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
