Global partnership with BirdLife International

Since 2011, we have been cooperating with the largest international nature conservation organisation, BirdLife International. Our work with BirdLife International and our cooperation with its national partner organisations help us minimise our environmental impact and promote biodiversity in our quarries and the surrounding areas.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of their partnership, HeidelbergCement and BirdLife have released a joint statement firmly supporting the EU Biodiversity Strategy commitment 2030 to establish progressive restoration targets.

Joint actions and key results

  • Policy joint statements.
  • Regular analyses of the geographical proximity of our sites to areas of recognised high biodiversity value.
  • Training and capacity building internally.
  • Joint representation at ecological conferences.
  • Over 25 local projects.

Biodiversity effect

Multiple positive effects, for example:

  • Invasive alien species code of conduct developed in Israel has now been incorporated into the country policy.
  • 15% of nesting common terns are found on concrete islands at our sites in the Czech Republic.
  • Largest man-made reedbed in the UK.
  • Two former extraction pits designated as Natura 2000.
