Liberty Bridge (Hungary)
For the renovation of the famous Liberty Bridge in Budapest, Hungary, reinforced concrete deck slabs of HeidelbergCement’s joint venture Duna-Dráva Cement Kft. (DDC) were used, providing the most suitable admixtures and related concrete technology.
The Liberty Bridge (architect: János Feketeházy) crosses the Danube River as it runs through Budapest. It was the 3rd bridge connecting Buda and Pest at the end of the 19th century, and features nowadays tram rails, roadways, and two sidewalks. The bridge is 333.6 metres long and 20.1 metres wide.
To find the best concrete solution for the renovation, testing was carried out at Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) by structural engineers. The lead contractor requested ready-mix designs from two companies, including DDC. On the site, concrete cubes and beams were tested by the contractor and the University lab for compressive strength, water-proofing, frost resistance, and shrinkage. DDC products performed best.
