Premiere for serial 3D construction printing with sustainable building materials from Heidelberg Materials

  • As a new reference project for serial 3D-printed residential construction with sustainable building materials, the DREIHAUS project is currently underway in Heidelberg
  • Heidelberg Materials, recognised for its expertise in 3D concrete printing and the decarbonisation of the built environment, is supplying high-tech materials with significantly reduced CO₂ emissions for DREIHAUS
  • The project is also the first in Germany to use carbon captured evoZero® cement

Using sustainable high-tech building materials from Heidelberg Materials, the DREIHAUS project by real estate company KRAUSGRUPPE is currently under construction in Heidelberg and will serve as a future reference for serial 3D residential building printing. Developed as part of a collaboration between PERI 3D Construction and Korte-Hoffmann Gebäudedruck, the scalable concept for a three-story apartment building has been optimised for 3D printing. Leveraging its expertise in 3D concrete printing and the decarbonisation of the built environment, Heidelberg Materials is providing high-tech materials with a substantially reduced carbon footprint for the implementation of DREIHAUS in Heidelberg.

The first two of three buildings planned in Heidelberg will be constructed using evoBuild® 3D printing – a fully recyclable construction material. This material features a binder with a carbon footprint that is more than 50% lower than the one of conventional Portland cement. For the third building, the partners are taking a pioneering step: evoZero® from Heidelberg Materials will be used as the binder, marking its first application in Germany. evoZero® is the world’s first carbon captured cement, enabling customers to make significant progress toward their climate targets. The CO₂ reduction in evoZero® is achieved through the application of innovative carbon capture technology at the Heidelberg Materials plant in Brevik, Norway.

“We are committed to creating real solutions for decarbonising the built environment and advancing sustainable innovation together with our partners. With the German premiere of evoZero®, the world’s first carbon captured cement, we are ringing in a new era of sustainable construction today in Heidelberg and across the country,” says Dr Dominik von Achten, CEO of Heidelberg Materials.

“DREIHAUS, built with CO₂-reduced, circular building materials from Heidelberg Materials, exemplifies the transformation underway in the German construction industry. Here, we are demonstrating how the continuous expansion of our sustainable product portfolio enables us to offer our customers not only highly innovative, but also customised solutions that provide optimal support for the successful realisation of diverse construction projects,” adds Christoph Streicher, General Manager Heidelberg Materials Germany.

Heidelberg Materials is pursuing an ambitious sustainability strategy: By 2030, the company aims to generate more than 50% of its revenue from sustainable products and reduce specific net CO₂ emissions per tonne of cementitious material to below 400 kg. Through innovations such as evoZero® and the ongoing expansion of circular economy and digitalisation, Heidelberg Materials is reinforcing its pioneering role in the transformation of the building materials sector.

3D-printed products are an integral part of the portfolio. The company offers architects, engineers, manufacturers of 3D printers, and builders who want to realise buildings or concrete products using 3D printing not only high-quality products but also technical expertise. Compared to traditional construction methods, the 3D printing process enables significantly reduced material consumption through appropriate design planning, thereby further reducing CO₂ emissions. The process also increases the speed and productivity of construction processes and makes construction sites safer by reducing dust and noise emissions and minimising the use of tools.
