Responsible procurement at Heidelberg Materials
Global Virtual Supplier Day 2025 – Health and Safety
Heidelberg Materials currently collaborates with thousands of suppliers and business partners globally, with an annual supplier spend of 17 billion euros. More than 90% of all goods and services are sourced locally across more than 50 countries.
Beyond operational excellence, a key focus in our supplier engagements is sustainability, including a shared commitment to rigorous ESG standards. Our vision for a sustainable supply chain places strong emphasis on human rights, health and safety, and calls on our suppliers to actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Sustainability plays a fundamental role in safeguarding and promoting health and safety
As part of our Responsible Procurement Initiative, we maintain a proactive and continuous dialogue with our suppliers. This includes not only one-on-one meetings, but also virtual supplier days focused on sustainability, which have received very positive feedback.
Health and safety was the focus topic of Heidelberg Materials‘ Global Virtual Supplier Day 2025. For this event, we engaged with a record number of suppliers – 1,200 companies from over 10 countries were invited.
In her presentation, Chief Sustainability Officer and Managing Board member Dr Katharina Beumelburg emphasized how health and safety is an important factor for sustainability in the supply chain. Hakan Gurdal, Member of the Managing Board responsible for Africa-Mediterranean-Western Asia, focused his presentation on health and safety, with a particular emphasis on road safety and best practices.
At Heidelberg Materials, health and safety for our employees, suppliers and communities always comes first.
Their messages were complemented by presentations from the CPO, Daniel Köstl, and Dr Klaus Hormann, Senior Manager Health & Safety.
The KPI by which Heidelberg Materials measures progress on the journey towards a sustainable supply chain is the “Supplier Sustainability Performance Rate,” which represents the percentage of critical supplier spend with an externally confirmed green ESG rating. Heidelberg Materials aims to achieve an ESG Supplier Sustainability Performance Rate of 80% by 2030. In 2024, the rate was already at 64%. Trusting business partnerships based on full transparency are essential for seamless cooperation and sustainable operational performance.
