HeidelbergCement publishes Climate Policy

13 December 2018 | HeidelbergCement acknowledges the need to promote the transition to a low carbon economy while supporting the social and economic development of the countries where we are active.

We are committed to contribute our part towards carbon neutrality in developing new technologies and building solutions, in cooperation with policymakers and other relevant industrial players.

To underline our commitment and alignment with ambitious international goals, we issued a Climate Policy.

The Climate Policy includes the following actions:

  1. We reduce the carbon footprint of our cement production operations by 30% until 2030 compared to 1990.
  2. We invest in Research and Development (R&D) of new technologies for the mitigation of process carbon emissions, such as carbon capture and sequestration/utilisation, wherever technically and economically feasible.
  3. We tackle combustion emissions by substituting fossil fuels with waste material based fuels and biomass wherever available.
  4. We continuously take action in energy conservation and efficiency improvement in all our operations, including the recovery of waste heat. We invest in renewable electrical energy generation wherever economically and ecologically feasible.
  5. We spend 80% of our R&D budget to develop more sustainable products like low carbon concrete. We promote concrete recarbonation and recycling as well as the enhanced use of cementitious substitution materials.
  6. We support the development of construction solutions that improve the energy efficiency of buildings and infrastructure.
